Our Story

In 1985….

Visionary and pioneer, Ellen Khokha, was dedicated to creating a high-quality school with meaningful learning for children of full-time working parents – a phenomenon that was almost non-existent back then. Ellen grew our organization from one classroom to two campuses in her 27 years of service.

Quality education has been our driving force from the beginning. We became accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in 1989 and have held our accreditation since.

Ellen led our study of the Reggio Approach from the schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy in 1990 and eventually sent our staff to live the experience they had only studied in books. Through this opportunity, we reaffirmed our commitment to this pedagogical approach.

Since 2010, Pauline McPeake’s leadership has built upon the foundation of the Growing Place. Our program is recognized as a leader in early childhood education for emerging teachers which is why we were selected to operate the Santa Monica Early Childhood Lab School. We are proud to have three campuses engaging with our community today.
